The Zahid Mubarek Trust

We maintain and grow the legacy for change following Zahid’s tragic death.

We believe that the response to crime should be effective, fair, and humane, leaving a legacy that seeks to transform the prison system.

We honour Zahid’s memory by supporting people in the criminal justice system whilst advocating for systemic change.

We are an independent national charity founded in 2009 by the family of 19-year-old Zahid Mubarek who was murdered by his racist cellmate on the morning scheduled for his release from Feltham Young Offender Institution.

We work in a challenging context where substantial change takes time and enormous effort. We recognise the complexity and intersectionality of our work and take this into account when developing programmes that are relevant, efficient and effective.

We publish content which includes blog articles, reports, news and resources which our visitors will find useful. We also regularly post on our social media channels with updates. Please get in touch if you are looking for something specific.

Covid-19 and Prisons

We are collecting data, resources and stories on COVID-19 in prisons and will offer analysis to better understand how coronavirus is impacting prisoners, particularly those from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, including Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities.
